Independent Research Study (IRS) | One-on-One Research Mentorship with Professors & PhDs | Strengthen Your College Application

Updated: Oct 1

What is the Independent Research Study?

This Independent Research Study program empowers students to transform their interests into meaningful research. Beginning with an initial idea, students work closely with supervising professors to refine their topic, design a comprehensive research plan, and carry out in-depth investigations. With access to a wide network of professors across fields such as architecture, fine arts, finance, computer science, and the sciences, students are guided through research or project-based learning tailored to their passions. For high school participants, studies are focused more narrowly but examined in greater depth. Program outcomes include the creation and presentation of a research paper, with opportunities for journal publication and participation in research competitions.

Why having your own research paper gives you an advantage in college applications

1. Evidence of academic rigor

  • Demonstrate that you’ve moved past school-level knowledge by actively engaging with your subject, thinking critically, and applying advanced research skills.

  • Develop strong research habits to gather information effectively, analyze sources critically, stay disciplined, and manage time to meet deadlines.

  • Highlight your genuine interest and commitment, especially when your research aligns with your intended college major.

  • Provide concrete evidence of your ability to think independently, conduct rigorous research, and communicate your findings.

  • Produce independent, scholarly research on a topic of your own, demonstrating originality and academic excellence.

2. Strengthen your college essays and interviews

  • Show your authentic voice by clearly describing your research process and learning experiences.

  • Collaborate with U.S. college professors and provide compelling evidence of your academic growth.

  • Spark engaging and insightful conversations during interviews about your research.

  • Demonstrate initiative, independent thinking, and your unique potential.

  • Outline your motivations, methods, challenges, and results to answer questions like “What have you learned from your research?” or “What did you gain from working with your professor?”

  • Conduct independent research as strong evidence of your academic and professional potential.

  • Greatly strengthen your college application with the research experience.

3. Opportunities for publications and letters of recommendation

  • Completing a research paper allows you to submit your work to academic journals, conferences, or international platforms, which can increase your visibility and strengthen your college applications by showcasing your achievements.

  • Having your name published through a research institution increases the visibility and recognition of your work within the academic community.

  • The experience of submitting your work for publication demonstrates that you possess professional scholarly potential and a track record of academic engagement while still in high school.

  • Demonstrating dedication during the research process offers the opportunity for a strong letter of recommendation from the supervising professor.
